Safety

  • Properly made cold-process (lye-based) soap is fully saponified — it's a mild, alkaline soap, not caustic. It should be cured for several weeks before sale, which lets it harden and mellow (curing is mainly the bar losing water, not the lye "going away" — saponification itself finishes much earlier). If a bar feels unusually soft or greasy, or stings when used, stop using it and let the maker know.
  • Keep out of eyes; rinse well with water if contact occurs.
  • If you have sensitive skin or known allergies, patch-test on a small area first (check again after 24-48 hours) and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
  • This soap contains essential oil(s) and/or fragrance oil(s). These are more likely than a fragrance-free bar to cause a reaction in people with sensitive skin or known allergies — essential oils aren't inherently gentler than synthetic fragrance.

Care

  • Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight — heat, humidity, and UV light fade scent and color faster.
  • Use a draining soap dish between uses so the bar can dry out; sitting in standing water shortens a bar's life.
  • Scent and color naturally soften over time even with good storage — that alone doesn't mean the soap has gone bad. Orange or brown spots, a rancid or crayon-like smell, or stinging when used are different, and can mean something's actually wrong — stop using it and let the maker know.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold-process soap still caustic when I receive it?
Properly made cold-process (lye-based) soap is not caustic — saponification (the chemical reaction that uses up the lye) is substantially complete within a day or two, well before the multi-week cure most makers use afterward. Curing mainly lets the bar lose water and harden; it doesn't "fix" a batch that was mismeasured. A bar that stings or feels unusually soft or greasy wasn't made or cured correctly, and shouldn't be used — let the maker know.
Why does storage matter for soap?
Heat, humidity, and direct sunlight fade scent and color faster, and letting a bar sit in standing water between uses shortens how long it lasts. None of this is a safety issue — just care guidance to get the most out of a bar.
Does this replace the ingredient list my soap is required to carry?
No. This is a customer-facing care card, not the FDA/FPLA-required ingredient declaration, net-weight statement, or business-address label. See the handmade label checklist for that.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server. Printing or saving as PDF uses your browser's own print function.
